Balance Training & Fall Prevention

Falls result in more hospitalizations, nursing home admissions, and fatalities than any other single condition. People over the age of 65 have a 1 in 4 chance of falling, each and every year (Source CMS, 2020).

Once a person has a serious fall, the chance of a second fall increases by 80%.

Falling not only can cause an injury, but they change people’s lives and independence . We are committed to helping the people of Hawaii reduce their chance of falling.

Vestibular Rehabilitation

Many clients have vertigo from inner ear disorders, brain injuries, or other neurological conditions. Our therapists have experience in improving and removing vertigo from a wide variety of causes. Some clients have had vertigo for weeks while others have suffered dizziness and vertigo for months or years. We test and  evaluate each client to determine the cause of their dizziness and then develop a program of therapy and home exercises that help restore their balance and remove or reduce their dizziness. We have helped hundreds of clients be free of their symptoms and we can help you.

Full VNG testing at our Aiea location, vestibular rehabilitation for vertigo and dizziness,  Vestibular therapy techniques including Epley Maneuver, vestibular exercises, and balance training. We help clients with a wide variety of conditions reduce their symptoms of vertigo and dizziness. Many clients improve within one or two sessions.

Targeted Surface Perturbation Activities

Targeted surface perturbation activities are therapeutic exercises that deliberately challenge a person’s balance by introducing controlled, unexpected changes in the support surface—such as shifting platforms, foam pads, moving treadmills, or gentle pushes and pulls—to train the body’s automatic balance responses. These activities are designed to improve how quickly and effectively the nervous system detects instability and activates the correct muscles to prevent a fall. A physical therapist plays a key role by carefully selecting the type, intensity, and direction of perturbations based on the patient’s diagnosis, strength, and fall risk, while ensuring safety through proper guarding and progression. Through repeated, task-specific practice, targeted surface perturbation training helps restore postural control, improve confidence, and reduce the likelihood of falls in older adults and individuals with neurological or vestibular impairments.
